In the late 70’s they started putting movies on tape. By 1980 you could rent a machine and a bunch of movies for the weekend from the “video” store. Why would anyone rent a VCR? Because when they first came out they were $1,500 bucks a piece at a time when a six pack cost $3 and a new car was $7500! So there were two options, you could rent a Betamax machine or a VHS machine. When all was said and done VHS won the video war and Beta was the loser. So for some reason I associate the word Beta with LOSER! I have digressed once again.
The Master of Beta is a session IPA from the Timmins based brewers Full Beard. On the can it says “Education is good but great beer is gooder!” I see they went to the same Timmins grammar school as Shania Twain, which don’t impress me much.*
They say that the beta acids give it aroma and alpha acids give it bitterness, so the six different hops they are using give it the flavour through their beta acids. Enough fancy science you say. How does it taste.
This session IPA is full of refreshing and low on bitterness. Lots of flavour but minimal bite back. A great session IPA. A refreshing quaff for the game, or the dock, or the deck. Well done Full Beard. Beta video may have been a loser but the Master of Beta is a winner.
