I met Gretzky once. Many years ago, he was coaching the Coyotes and we were invited to meet him and watch him line up the team. He was quiet spoken, not a fire and brimstone coach, and when he spoke to those players you could hear a pin drop, he garnered respect. His beers, not so much.
I haven’t had a great one from the great one yet. This one is no exception.
I had a small pilsner glass so got the first half of the can in. Very bubbly, substantial head, and clear as a bell. Hazy? Not from where I’m standing it isn’t. Plain almost nonexistent aroma. The first swig was clean, a bit grainy with no aftertaste. Very fizzy. Fizzy mouthful overrides the flavourful. Not at all like the can’s description of a ” bread spicy hop quality with a clean bitterness and smooth finish”. Maybe the clean finish but everything else sounded like a different brew.
Here’s the thing, I pour the second half of the can and it’s as hazy as a whiteout on the north shore of Lake Superior. Still carbonated but not as bad, the floral notes are there with a bit of bitter.
When all is said and done if was like two different tastings. No matter how you look at it, the excess carbonation took away from the taste. Neither beer that showed up tonight was a great one.
