Stella, Stella. Was Stanley Kowalski ( Marlon Brando) making an impassioned plea to win his wife back, * or did he just have a powerful thirst for a frosty brewskie? We would expect the former but you never know.

The star of Artois. Artois is a region in Northern France and yet this professes to be Belgian beer. It appears the Star of Artois is in honor of master Belgian brewer Sébastien Artois. Now brewed in the USA, it has lost its official “Imported” status  unless you consider US brews to  be imported.

This lager/ pilsner** pours so clear I can read the paper through it. Slight malt aroma but just noticeable,  not really much there. Smooth, no bite, zing, snap or bitter whatsoever, just a bit of  malt with a touch of grain to it. Just enough grain to suggest that this big US brewer beer was at one time European. Watery mouthfeel. As I take another pull or two it seems like the grain has been harvested,  as in gone.

I am not sure what Artois’ star was like in 1926 when this seasonal beer was introduced and named after the  Christmas star, but I would guess it is quite a bit different today. IBU and ABV have both been reduced from the original. Another Anheuser-Busch big brewer brew offering that is middle of the road OK.

*Editor's Comment: The1951 movie "A Streetcar Named Desire", based on Tennessee Williams play, garnered Oscar's for Kim Hunter, Karl Malden and Vivien Leigh, but despite Brando's stella(r) performance there was no statuette for him. The Oscar for best actor that year went to Bogart for the African Queen. In 1973 Brando refused the Oscar for his Godfather role.

**Editor's Comment: On the can it says Lager, it is officially deemed a Euro Pale Lager but many consider it to be a Pilsner.
