Beet Red

Red Fox Ale

MacKinnon Brothers Brewing Co.

4.2% Alcohol

Farmer Steve commented favourably regarding this brewery. He liked that they operated out of an old barn, and he called it “a profit making deal”, which in his vernacular is the ultimate compliment.  RA has also sampled a few of their brews but this is the first MacKinnon Brothers brew I have had the pleasure of knowing. Located in Bath Ontario, the MacKinnon ancestry in the area goes back to 1784, so I am assuming they were United Empire Loyalists*.

Very first impression upon pouring, very red. A bright red I haven’t seen before in a brew, and I have seen a few, ruby red, Dorothy slippers red, beet red.  Pretty red and a pretty red, with a bright white head. Easy drinking and refreshing, light malt flavour with a touch of hops. An interesting ale with a subtle unique flavour to it, very good. A bit of a sweet dry finish, before I read the label I was thinking cherry. I checked out the label and the beet red colour actually comes from freshly juiced beets, which would create the sweetness as well.

This is a unique and great tasting ale, very easy drinking, I wished I had another handy last night to continue this tasting.

*Editor’s Comment: The United Empire Loyalists came north to Canada when the Thirteen Colonies revolted against Great Britain and established the independent country the United States of America in 1776. As their name suggests, the Loyalists were loyal to Britain and did not share the Americans' independent aspirations.
