Smith Falls* Ontario. South of Highway 7. The third degree is what I get from the Morality Department (the missus) after a weekend at JT’s cottage, but I am guessing the brewery name Four Degrees is about the four owners all graduating from university and using their education to brew beer and support the community of Smith Falls. Both noble causes in my books, well done.

From 1963 to 2008 Smith Falls was the home of the Hersey Chocolate factory. In 2014, the former Hershey facility was purchased by the medical marijuana company Tweed Marijuana now known as publicly traded company Canopy Growth Corporation (TSE:WEED). The town has now been cited as the “Pot Capital of Canada”, so we will have to think of a new nickname for Vancouver. I guess someone has to grow enough pot to supply the 100s of Cannabis stores that have popped up in every town across Canada, even in our local grocery store.

Ok, I’ve taken my pot shot, now time for a brew review. This beer of the month club selection is a traditional red ale. It poured more amber than red with a paper thin head. Malt aroma but some caramel sweetness there too. It has a full malt flavour with a crisp body, some carbonation. There were no hops or bitters in the immediate area of my glass. Really a malt forward brew. I found this brew amenable to large swigs as am I. Amber flavour with a red body and mouthfeel. Not your typical amber or red, and that’s OK, viva la difference. More a fireside brew or a watch the hockey game brew than a hot weather quaff, which is what you would expect from an amber style. Enjoyable. Great to see Smith Falls on the map again, this time for their brewery.

*Editor’s Comment: The town is named after Thomas Smyth, a United Empire Loyalist who settled there in 1786. For more on the United Empire Loyalists check out the Red Fox (the beer not the comedian) review "Beet Red". It is also the home of a more recent resident, Brooke Henderson, the winningest professional golfer in Canadian history.
