A double hopped amber ale. Every can supports the Wayne Gretzky Foundation. I would think that Gretzky had made enough money with all his product placements and investments that there was no need for a charity to support him but these pro athletes tend to live the high life with models for wives and fancy cars so maybe he is a little short on cash these days?*
Amber lager versus amber ale. I ruminated on this a bit, and looked back on some past reviews and I tend to enjoy the amber lagers a bit more, although a good amber usually gets a pat on the back from yours truly. The amber ales seem to have the amber flavour competing with a bit of hoppy fruit or crispness, the professors of beerology would say they are more complex.
In this case with this 99 double hopped approach, the aroma is a bit confusing and first and second swigs have crisp citrus competing rather than complementing the more traditional amber flavours. But it all settles into a nice amber as I progressed further into my glass. I am just not too sure why they wanted to make a complex amber, why double hopped? I get the feeling they are trying too hard to differentiate themselves with a double hopped amber. According to the can they say “anything worth doing is worth doing twice” ** but I am not sure that the second batch of hops was worth it.
All said and done *** this ended up being a good amber experience
