For you hockey fans of a certain vintage you may be thinking of Bobby Clarke when it comes to a solid hack, but it appears that Gateway is continuing their curling theme following their “On the Button” Amber Lager. For those unacquainted with the art and science of sliding a 20kg chunk of granite from the hack down a 45m long by 5m wide rink of ice so it ends up on the button (that would be curling), then you quite possibly are also not acquainted with falling on your ass on foresaid rink because your slider was on the wrong foot. My once a year curling and beer outing does not make me an expert on the subject, but according to Curling Canada the hack is the foothold at either end of the rink that you push off from when you slide that rock down the ice off line and not far enough.*
Out and about again always in search of the elusive open bar, and was successful. This Solid Hack from Gateway was front and center. The only glass available was a Flying Monkeys special, which of course is neither here nor there or anywhere for that matter. A nice clear light golden pour, with a light white topper. A somewhat grainy, almost rye grain, aroma, which was odd because according to the can they are using corn and rice with their barley in this brew. First swig was that grainy flavour mixed with a malt lager, a bit harsh. Lots of flavour, but not the smooth premium lager I was hoping for. The grainy bite did settle down after a few pulls. All in all a middlin’ lager, playing lead so Gateway’s Lager Amber skip can clean up with an on the button shot.
