My evening dalliance was A Stout With Coffee. I usually don’t have a coffee after 5PM but I figured it must be 5 o’clock somewhere.
This tasting started out a tad unbalanced*, with a slight pop and spill in my office, the coffee percolating perhaps? The office cleaning staff (me) immediately responded and rectified the situation. The COMDB Guide to Beer Tasting defines a poor pour but tells us nothing about a pop and spray that actually misses the glass.
Persevering past the pop and pour problems, this Bellwood brew pours slow but expresso black, with a slim tan topper. An aroma of, not surprisingly, stout with coffee. First taste is…… stout with coffee, no donut. But the coffee is a partner in the relationship, and in fact is letting the roasted malt dance lead. There is a bit of cocoa sweet in there as well, all very well put together. Very tasty traditional stout with a flavourful, tasty, and inviting, but not overbearing coffee element. Gymnastics on the balance “bean” by the Sam James Coffee Bar. And well balanced it is. As it warms the coffee steps forward a bit but this brew never loses its balance.
A very nice traditional stout…..with coffee.
