An Admirable Admiral

Admiral's Best Bitter

The Collingwood Brewery

4.2% Alcohol

Although this Admiral may be stern, he should take a bow, because in any port his ship has a star aboard in this brew. Now that I have exhausted my nautical vocabulary on a useless mnemonic, its time to get down to some serious beer reviewing with this beer of the month club selection.

A pint of Bitter has been the most popular draft sold in British pubs in modern times and has been called the national drink of England. That got me pondering; what’s the national drink of Canada? Google tells me a Caesar is considered Canada’s national cocktail.  In the US it’s Bourbon.* As for Canada’s most popular drink there is a reason why you see a Timmie’s on every corner. Farmer Steve, you will be happy to know that our most popular drink is coffee. Beer was halfway down the list but at least it beat out wine.

Collingwood is freestyling again with the Admiral and his best bitter.  It pours a bright light golden amber, clear sailing. A few bubbles coming up from the depths but minimal head topside. A sea breeze of bread malt with some mild hops on the nose. First swig is a bread malt mild body with some mild hops on the tail end. A mild malt, nearing lager like. Easy drinking, smooth, great flavour, quite enjoyable.

*Editor’s Comment: Bourbon whiskey is named for Bourbon County, Kentucky. It was proclaimed the U.S. National Spirit by an act of Congress in 1964.
