Continuing their Globetrotter Adventure Series, All or Nothing’s intrepid traveller Cornelius Sandiego is in the UK to check out something extra special of the malt and hops persuasion. When I think of Globetrotters I think of Meadowlark Lemon and the Harlem Globetrotters. Then I think about how much it would suck to be on the Washington Generals. That’s the team that the Globetrotters defeat every game since their inception in 1952.* When it comes to the Harlem Globetrotters one could say that the odds are forever in their favour.
The last All or Nothing globetrotting tour de force was to Germany, and the schwarz was with them. This time I am pouring an ESB, and we are going to find out just how special extra special really is.
It pours a nut brown, as in dark nut, a darker than amber, just look at the picture and you will see what I mean. An off-white head is in the offing. A nutty malt aroma, so no surprise that the first swig very malty nutty, but with a burnt finish. Malt to a fault, the word aggressive comes to mind. This one is not for the meek, but not too worry, I hear they have quite an inheritance in store.** Second swig and we are getting to know each other a little better, trending more towards a lager feel but still with a strong finish. More malt than your average lager that’s for sure, full flavoured, a nutty buddy. It mellowed a bit as I did, have, and am presently doing, but maintained a crusty off-putting finish as I did, have and am presently doing. Sounds like a cranky old beer.
