My plan for Father’s Day. Take a motorcycle ride (no falls), have a beer and mow the lawn. So after my bike ride I am doing some Father’s “day” drinking, and the song “Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad” comes to mind. I tell my son this and he says “as long as you weren’t riding like a bat out of hell.”* Smart kid, well raised. As you may have surmised by now, the lawn still needs mowing.
When I saw Gateway’s beer “Over the Falls” I immediately thought of all the attempts to survive a trip over Niagara Falls in a barrel, boat, or bubble. Ever since crazy old Annie Taylor submitted to the call of the falls, lots of people have been dying to try it.** But our hometown heroes Gateway aren’t talking about Niagara, they are referring to a more local and far less dangerous cascade, that being Duchesnay Falls.
With some New Zealand hops to boot, this is no average run of the mill day at the races Czech pils, that’s for sure. A pale golden pour, a good look, with a fleetingly feeble foam and froth of a head. A fresh crisp, not hoppy mild malt aroma. A smooth malt with a touch of bitter with a slightly crisp finish. Did I mention there is some sweet in the mix too? Well there is. Crisp and sweet and smooth, a nice refreshing combo. As it warmed I thought I detected some floral notes at times.
If I were to drive up to the Gateway drive thru and order the smooth sweet crisp combo please, they would say “ Oh you mean the Over the Falls New Zealand Pilsner”. That’s what I said wasn’t it!. ***
This is a very tasty brew. I love it when they take a classic and try something new that works. Of course, I don’t have as much love when it doesn’t work. But this one does! Another Gateway winner.
