A Grisette?

Hibernating Grizzly

Muskoka Brewery

4% Alcohol

If you thought that a Grisette was a Memphis Grizzly’s cheerleader* you would be incorrect. FYI the Memphis Grizzlies cheerleaders are actually called Grizz Girls. What kind of a name is that? Sounds like a geriatric cheer squad to me. Why not the Memphis Belles, or the Riverboat Rockettes, the Graceland Girls, the Nearly Bears, or a dozen other far better names?  What were they thinking, or drinking? Chances are pretty good that whatever they were drinking, it wasn’t a grisette.

A grisette is actually a style of beer you probably hadn’t heard of before (me either). Originating from the border region of France and Belgium, it is a similar to farmhouse ales and the German gose beers. This version has an added twist, that would be a twist of lemon, as in lemon zest.

The Muskoka brewers have whipped up a light version with “citrus and spice an everything nice” they tell us. It pours a bright golden lemony yellow, with a bright white meringue on top of this slice of pie. Definitely lemon tang and zest aroma. It tastes lemony, but not  tart. Zesty, sprite like, but not spritzer fizzy, just a bit fizzy.  Lemonade for adults who like beer (and lemonade). It is a zesty fizzy slightly tangy lemony refresher. I enjoyed it but I get the feeling some beer drinkers would struggle with this one a bit.

Although I was watching the Blue Jays while quaffing this one it seems to me this is a perfect “twisting by the pool” or “walking on sunshine”** brew. In the right time and place it could well have been a super suds in the sun score.

*Editor’s Comment: Originally the Vancouver Grizzlies, they were part of the NBA’s 1996 expansion into Canada along with the Toronto Raptors. In 2001 they were sold and moved to Memphis but retained the name Grizzlies. Although you may see an occasional grizzly bear in the outer Vancouver area it is highly doubtful you will ever run into a grizzly bear in Memphis unless you go to the zoo.

**Editor’s Comment: “Twisting by the Pool” is a 1983 song by Dire Straits written by Mark Knopfler. “Walking on Sunshine” is a 1985 hit by Katrina and the Waves written by the band’s guitarist Kimberley Rew. Unlike a lot of bands with their first recording contract, the band kept the rights to their songs which turned out to be very lucrative for them. In addition to 30 years of royalties, in 2015 BMG acquired the rights to the song and the other songs from the bands catalogue for $17 Million CDN.
