After two mediocre tastings a California Common sounded like a sound bet. And The Ol’ 39 sounded just fine, a Kame & Kettle special tribute to the local volunteer firefighters. Formerly called Schteam, referring of course to the original Cali Common steam beers. We aren’t too sure what the Ol’ 39 refers to, or why the “D” is MIA but that’s A-OK.
Check it out, that’s a pour to adore. Beauty caramel brown with a bright white cap. Love me an amber and this one ain’t far off. A malt toffee aroma, smells spectacular. And the taste! Great caramel malt flavour with a bit of fizz, it’s all working. The fizz departs leaving a smooth delicious malt caramel common. An esteemed steamer. This malt sweet beauty does big swigs too! Slight bitters on the finish, they come, they go, were they ever really there?
This brew may not be able to put out a fire but it sure can quench a thirst. Sometimes I have one beer and I wish it was two. Well, I wish this one was three. Great beer.
