Sunday Night Sociables

Three Toques

Scotland Yard Pub

5% Alcohol

At the big Mining4Beer event at Scotland Yard in downtown Hogtown and the Sunday night socialites drank up $20,000 in the first 90 minutes. And then the wheels came off and the fun began. The big mining convention in Toronto * is a thirsty affair, with pitchers and pitches going hand in hand. It’s the type of event where you need a one and done mentality otherwise 10 isn’t enough.

So it seemed like an ideal venue for a COM and Crownsmen Sunday night special. A sit down and sample suds show with Gus, Cam the Man, and Pam. Her boss had told us “If Pam has more than 3 beers she’s off the show”. Let’s put it this way, she hadn’t had more than 3 when we started the show. Guests were worried about slips, trips, spills and uttering profanities during recording. I told them that we can edit any of that out. What I didn’t tell them is we never do.

Two Toques

For our brew sampling it was the house lager and you know you are in Canada when you’re trying Three Toques on for size. Not to be confused with the 5 golden toques that Bob and Doug received from their true love for Christmas. ** That’s right, Three Toques on tap, on our table, and on the house. My favourite kind of beer, free.

A clear golden sociable, a see through brew providing a view of the bar and a bartender busier than the Royal family rumour mill. A traditional malt aroma, quickly followed by a sizable swig because podcasting is thirsty work. A house and home lager, standard malt, easy drinking, touch of lager sweet and that’s all she wrote, and he didn’t write much either. It was definitely going down easy, middlin’ malt flavour and no bite or bitter. Designed for volume consumption so ideal for the event.

I enjoyed the Sunday night socializing, the quaff and the price.

*Editor’s Comment: The big mining show referred to is the annual Prospectors and Developers Association Convention (PDAC) with attendance in the order of 25,000. The Mining4Beer event had over 2,000 registrants.

**Editor’s Comment: Bob and Doug McKenzie’s 1981 album “Great White North” had their version of the 12 Days of Christmas. “The fifth day of Christmas, My true love gave to me Five golden toques, Four pounds of back bacon, Three French toast, Two turtlenecks, And a beer, In a tree.”
