A Local Libation

Locals Lager

Clear Lake Brewing Co.

4.5% Alcohol

That’s right, it’s the largest beer spa in the world.

Not our first Local Lager but this one is plural, not possessive, and from a different locale. As in Clear Lake, home of….. (drum roll please) THE LARGEST BEER SPA IN THE WORLD! The Muskoka Beer Spa has it all. Pools, glamping cabins, a dump bucket, saunas, fire pits, hot tubs, a beach, a lake plunge, food, and of course beer. As in a keg and draft tap in every cabin. They even have crash cabins for two with, according to the brochure “in and out privileges”. * And just like Vegas, what happens in a crash cabin stays in a crash cabin.

The crash cabins for two by the pool have “in and out privileges”.

On our COMDB annual pilgrimage to Muskoka Oktoberfest we have sampled a number of the local offerings, so it’s only natural that a Locals Lager would be a brew review.

A semi-hazy yellow gold of a pour, headless, nonetheless. The aroma is malt bread with a touch of spice. The spice didn’t come through on the quaff and what we have is a watery malt lager with a smooth sweet finish and a sweet aftertaste. Perhaps the Beer Spa has added an apiary to its extensive list of features because this brew certainly tastes like a honey lager.*  Although a beehive next to the tanning chairs may not bee the drawing card they were hoping for?

Easy drinking, a solid local lager, nothing fancy. Malt smooth sweet, repeat.

*Editor’s Comment: Beekeeping, also called apiculture, is mainly about establishing an environment where bees can produce more honey that they can use. In a hive the Queen bee is in charge, the thousands of worker bees are female and the handful of male bees do no work at all.
