Sleeman is the only brewer that has the Department of Morality’s good housekeeping seal of approval. Yes, the missus comes out of her self proclaimed prohibition once-a-year for the Superbowl when she sips and savours a Sleeman Clear 2.0, full throttle out of the bottle. Her Superbowl suds of choice. Me, I remember some time ago enjoying a downtown Sleeman Honey Brown, quite possibly the first craft beer* I ever quaffed.
In fact, when I saw this brew I thought it was their Honey Brown, the packaging and the busy bee la meme chose. But they explain that this blonde is inspired by their classic Honey Brown. Honey is a popular addition to lots of brews with mixed results. When it comes to honey, the not so secret secret to success, subtleness.
A holdin’ golden honey of a gold pour, with a nice bright white honey comb topper. Definitely some sweet honey aroma, maybe too much honey? First quaff alleviates any concern. What we have is a nice malt base with a touch of flat bitters and the secret sauce, subtle sweets. The sweet ebbs and flows but never crosses the line. I really enjoyed this flavourful slightly sweet touch of alle bitters lager.
This is definitely a fridge stocker, a beer that almost everyone will enjoy. Easy drinking, flavourful, unique but not extreme. I actually enjoyed this more than the original Honey Brown.
