Bob and Suze free wheelin’

In 1963 Bob Dylan was free wheelin’ with his iconic second album. Strollin’ down the highway on Jones Street in the West Village with his girl from the North Country, hair blowin’ in the wind. The weather forecast was that a hard rain’s a-gonna fall, but they didn’t think twice, it was all right. *

A year or two later I was free wheelin’ too, through the side streets of the limestone city, cruisin’ on my banana seat three speed with the monkey handle bars. A sweet ride for sure. Speaking of bananas, this seems like a somewhat laboured segue into our brew of the hour, Lake of Bays Free Wheelin’. Not a banana seat ride, but certainly a banana wheat ride. Fear not, all will be explained.

Sweet ride

An golden amber glow, this winsome wheat is doing a great English pale impersonation. The smell of banana a-peels to some. Following the bunch of bananas aroma, the first taste is no surprise. Pepper spices, with banana, add a tingle and a slightly sour bitter finish, and you’ve got a refreshing brew. Refreshing but also intense. The spices mellow a bit, the banana backs off and some malt makes an appearance. The word complex comes to mind, it’s a busy brewski Now spices are back it’s a banana / white pepper battle royale for free wheelin’ wheat supremacy. The banana aroma stays the course cradle to grave.

The intensity wore me down after a while and I was thinking this would have been an ideal stubby rather than a tall boy. Not my favourite combo but they did a good job with it.

*Editor’s Comment: The classic 1963 Bob Dylan album “The Free Wheelin’ Bob Dylan” has a number of traditional or folk arrangements with Dylan’s lyrics and interpretation of the music. Tracks included “Down the Highway”, “Girl from North Country”, “Blowin’ in the Wind”, “A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall” and “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right”. The album cover shows Dylan with his then girlfriend Suze Rotolo. The picture was taken on Jones Street near 4th Avenue in the West Village of New York City.
