Don’t Miss the Train

Graffiti on a Passing Train

Something in the Water Brewing Co.

7.2% Alcohol

21 Pilots tell us that they aren’t just graffiti on a passing train, but this beer is. I tried to listen to the song from the beer can, * but the damn singer talks so fast I couldn’t get an ear in edge wise. I guess it’s one of them modern new-fangled hip-hop rap talking to the moon type tunes. I’ll revert to my turntable and some classic vinyl for the rest of this review.

I may not be modern but this Something in the Water West Coast IPA sure is. SITW tell us that they are using modern hops and more of them. The more hops the better I say. Time to hop on board this downbound train before I go off the rails and lose my train of thought.

A golden clear pour, nothing hazy about this crazy train. A tropical fruit candy aroma with some happy hoppy times ahead. We are now drinking curiously and it’s an interesting start, juicy almost sweet fruit to malt and then the hops kick in for a bit of dank in the tank, then a dry slight bitter aftertaste. Yes, it’s curiously crafty and quite tasty. A light watery, not at all hazy mouthfeel. A lot going on and it’s all good. It evolves a bit, with a juice funk mild hops smooth finish dry and the bitters start to fade.

A nice balance to it, tasty with the hops bringing some dank, some bitters and big flavour.

I may not have an ear for modern music, but when it comes to beer, it’s not what you hear that counts. Better get your ticket to ride, this is one night train you don’t want to miss.

*Editor’s Comment: The beer name “Graffiti on a Passing Train” is a lyric from the song “Levitate” by 21 Pilots from their 2018 album Trench. “Don’t Miss the Train” is a 1991 song by the band No Use for a Name (great band name by the way). “Talking to the Moon” is a 2010 song by Bruno Mars. “Downbound Train” is a 1984 release by Bruce Springsteen. “Crazy Train” is a 1980 song by Ozzy Osbourne. “Ticket to Ride” is a 1966 song by The Beatles. “Night Train” is a 1987 song by Guns N’ Roses.
