End of summer, bummer. As Joni used to say “summertime is falling down and winter is closing in”. Maybe the Beach Boys envisaged an endless summer but the Guess Who had Winter all year long. * The boys of summer are done and the other day I was in fits with the grandkids getting them to try on their ski boots. But if I can’t hold on to summer any longer, maybe I can hold onto a can of summer just a bit longer, and Great Lakes Brewery’s Summer Ale sounded like just the can for the job.
Just like all pilsners are lagers but not all lagers are pilsners, so to are all wheat beers ales, but not all ales are wheat beers. I know this for a fact because I enjoy a lot of ales but not so many wheat beers. GLB tell us that “Ginger and lemon got together at a pool party and said, “we should totally start a band.”” This must be their first single, time to see it it’s a hit.
A light clear pour, straw coloured, with a distinct lack of head. Not surprisingly there is an aroma of ginger and lemon emanating from my glass. The first taste is ginger lemon fizz with a flat dry finish, a super summer refresher. Chips and dip and some big screen round ball with a Summer Ale as winter is closing in, and me and We the North are both winners tonight. So is this winsome wheat. I couldn’t detect any floral through the ginger, which was a bonus for me. This beer is exactly what it says it is, a lemon ginger wheat summer ale. Ginger ale with a twist. Not my go to genre, I mean I wouldn’t drink Canada dry of it, but I enjoyed it last night.
