At the big Ontario Craft Brewers conference and attending talks and sessions but once my thirst for knowledge was slaked it was time to head for the bar so the bartender could tend to my other thirst. And a grand thirst it was, so I selected a Royal City brew to see how this ruler measures up . The regality of the situation seemed to call for an Imperial but that didn’t sound like the right call for some laid back day drinking, a day lite sounded just right.
We were previously granted audience at Royal City, their bootleg brewski was the real deal, and their Smoked Honey was a subtle sweety. RC tell us that this beer is perfect “when you just want a beer” so it sounds like an anytime brew for me.
A bright golden pour, with a few bubbles feeding a slim slip of a crown. It has a malt aspirin nose, a concern causing consternation. First quaff is more of the same, full malt with that acerbic aspirin follow and finish. Not smooth but lots of flavour for a light. The bitter acidic mid to finish and aftertaste faded a bit, or perhaps I was being acclimatized or desensitized, numbed and dumbed, to the acidity? * Or just maybe it starts to grow on you after a while?
I never picked up on “the hint of herbaceousness” that they talk about. If there was some floral there was not enough to fauna over.
An OK day lite, full flavoured, I’ll give it that.
