The Department of Cleanliness has deemed me Lord of the coffee table rings, but as far as Tolkien’s tome goes, I’m no expert. I did visit Bilbo, Newfoundland once. Or wait, no, that was Dildo, Newfoundland.

The drinks are on Bilbo tonight.

I may not have an eye for Mordor but the fine folks at Breakwall sure do. They celebrated Bilbo’s (not Dildo’s) eleventy-one years (111th ) birthday recently * and they tell us that this Green Dragon Ale is “inspired by the warmth of the Shire’s favourite Inn” and that it is “a comforting pint fit for any Hobbit Gathering.” **

I’m not familiar with what the Hobbit’s prefer when they belly up to the bar at the Green Dragon Inn, but for me it’s a Breakwall brown going down. Time for a flagon of Dragon.

About as dark brown as you can get before a fade to black. A nice slim trim white head on this dragon.  A dark lager stout aroma happening.  Yep, it’s a dark lager/ale. Roasted malt with some cocoa sweet and a very slight but smooth bitter finish. A middle of the road mouthfeel, with a nice balance. I expected a brown and got a black, luckily I’m partial to a black lager and this is a very good one. Happy belated birthday Bilbo.

*Editor’s Comment: The town of Dildo recently celebrated their 314th birthday.

**Editor’s Comment: Breakwall had a Lord of the Rings week recently, with a Celtic band, Tolkien trivia night, the launch of this beer, culminating in the Bilbo birthday bash. In the Tolkien Lord of the Rings series of books the Green Dragon Inn was a popular inn of Bywater, frequented by Hobbits from Bywater itself and the neighboring settlement of Hobbiton.
