No dessert until you finish your greens.
Pesto pasta, green beans and salad, kiwis for dessert and a bright green adult beverage. Contrary to Kermit’s constant lament, it is easy being green, especially on St. Patrick’s Day. Although it would have been an obvious, perhaps even a cliché, review of a Guinness, we’ve been there and done that. So I thought I would introduce an old Dubliner to a New Dubliner, and quote some of Ireland’s bard of choice, James Joyce.
Joyce enjoyed a brew every now and then, more often now than then from the looks of it. “The sacred pint alone can unbind the tongue” is what he said about what he called “the wine of Ireland.” * What Joyce would have thought about a hybrid Irish red ale meeting an IPA is anybody’s guess, although I would guess it may be a bit too eccentric a brew for such a “stout” Guinness lover. Time to see how it sits with a modern day cranky old man.
It’s a Radical Road ruddy red pour for sure, as headless as the Dullahan. ** It has a citrus fruit punch juice hop nose. Not your average run of the brewery IPA. First taste is a nice smooth juicer with the just right hoppy bitters backside. It has a fizzy almost crisp finish. Saints preserve us, it’s big swiggable! With a bit of an airy mouthfeel to it, it borders on sessionable.
Joyce loved his Guinness, who knows what he would have thought of this new age IPA but I enjoyed it, even if it wasn’t green.
Happy St. Patty’s day, sláinte!***
