Rust Red Ale

Railway City Brewing Co.

Lunchtime libations at Rust Bistrobar. * They say rust never sleeps but they aren’t open on Mondays and Tuesdays. ** Their house craft quaff, Rust Red Ale, from sources unknown, led to an investigation by our server who returned with a clue. St. Thomas was emblazoned on the side of the keg. Perhaps part of the sacraments of a Brotherhood of Brewers monastery from the old country? Or much more likely from the town of St.Thomas, a scant two hours from Rust. Which just happens to be the home of Railway City Brewing. Who have a tasty red ale called Iron Spike. Could this be a rusty Iron Spike perhaps? Perhaps.

A comforting copper clear colour of a craft, a rust red, with an off-white topped up tap of a topping. A caramel sweet aroma. It does have a toffee taste to it, offset by some ale bitters that lead into a slightly bitter aftertaste, all well balanced. It is a watery draft, no nitro here. Small glass, big swig, An OK red that would have went well with my meal if I hadn’t finished it first.

A lighter version of the Railway City classic, maybe oxidized a bit, but not sleeping.

*Editor’s Comment: Bistrobar is not a recognized word in the Scrabble dictionary. It is not technically a portmanteau either since the two words that are compounded are not short forms of other words.

**Editor’s Comment: The 1979 Neil Young album “Rust Never Sleeps” was a combination live and studio double album. The line “rust never sleeps” originated in an ad from Rust-oleum and it was mentioned to Young by Devo vocalist Mark Mothersbaugh.
