A Tartan Day Toast

Scottish Style Ale

Highlander Brew Co.

5.4% Alcohol

Sláinte mhath! Time for a Tartan Day toast to all you would be, wanna be, and wish you were Bravehearts. * Here’s to the Cranky Old Men and friends, may your whisky be as cheap as Farmer Steve, your problems as trivial as our Editor, and your beer as plentiful as Sunday morning amens.

I have a bit of the scotch in me myself, some days more than others. And we have sampled a few brews from the land of Bruce and Burns. BrewDog’s Black Heart was a Vegas Brew Tour special. Then there was Harviestoun’s Bitter & Twisted and Windswept’s Clavie direct from Lossiemouth Scotland. Time for a Highlander (United Craft) Scottish Style Ale. **

A tawny, brawny and bonnie pour. Dark brown, clear and frost headed. McIntosh toffee aroma. First swig is a toffee body with mild ale bitters finish and aftertaste. The smooth slightly sweet body with some itty bitty bitters is a fine balancing act with no net required.   After some yard work I was thirsty as a cranky old caravan camel on a Saharan summer sojourn so big swig time came early with this sampling. I confess, I may have had more than one, or two, big swigs with this smooth Scot.

The watery mouthfeel lends itself to easy drinking. Highlander calls it “smooth, mellow session ale”  and they ain’t lyin’. A fitting Tartan Day toast to you and yours.

*Editor’s Comment: April 6th is Tartan Day in Canada, a day to celebrate Scottish heritage and culture. Quite fittingly, the event originated in Nova Scotia (New Scotland) in 1987.

**Editor’s Comment: COMDB had previously reviewed Highlander’s (Brewed in the North) Scottish Ale. In 2020 United Craft (Toronto) and New Ontario Brewery (North Bay) took over production of Highlander beers previously brewed in South River. In 2023 the former owner’s of Highlander rebranded to South River Brewing Co. with their flagship beer Scottish Ale. Meanwhile New Ontario Brewery rebranded to Wildwoods in 2024 and 6 months later closed their doors, and South River Brewing closed earlier that year as well. What is left is United Craft Brewing out of Toronto with the Highlander brand but no longer the “brewed in the North” byline, and Scottish “Style” Ale rather than Scottish Ale.
