Victory at Vimy.

On April 9th 1917 at 5:30AM the consolidated Canadian Corps, all four divisions, began an artillery barrage on the German stronghold of Vimy Ridge. By April 12th the battle was won, but at the ultimate cost for many; 3,598 Canadian lives lost. Another 7,004 wounded, lives altered forever.  April 9th each year is Vimy Ridge Day in Canada, in honour of those who fought, and like Remembrance Day, another stark reminder of the horrors of war.

To recognize Vimy Ridge Day the COM do what COM do best, we toast the day with an apropos pint. A Vimy Lagered Ale from The Vimy Brewing Co. seemed to fit the bill.

A bright golden clear pour, maximum golden, minimum head. A light malt aroma. First taste is a malt forward lager sweet with an ale dry finish, all perfectly balanced. A nice middlin’ mouthfeel. Just when I thought it was big swig test time I realized I had been taking big swigs all along. That’s how easy drinking this one is. Balanced malt forward start to finish, as JT would say, “this beer tastes like beer”.  I would add that this beer tastes like good beer.

*Editor’s Comment: In 2003 the Canadian Government declared April 9th to be Vimy Ridge Day to honour and remember the Battle of Vimy Ridge from the First World War.
