Beer pioneer of the Western plains, Alberta based Big Rock, have been at it for quite some time. * They say you always remember your first, and it could well be that a Big Rock was my first craft beer although I can’t recall. The BR marketing machine tells us their brews are “handcrafted in a high-volume world”. I do like my rock loud so handcrafted beer with the tunes cranked sounds good to me. **

Big Rock ‘s bock was a knock your socks off quaff. Let’s see if Rock is on a roll. This time what’s going down is their cow town brown.

And a dark brown clear amber pour it is. Topped off with a bright white head, it’s a fine-looking ale. With a malt toffee aroma, it smells as good as it looks. The first taste is definitely caramel malt body with a dry finish and aftertaste. It has a slight bitter ale edge to the finish. A full mouthfeel makes for a smooth balanced tasty ale. Big swig time from big hat country and this one is smooth with some swagger, as in flavourful, and I favour the flavour.

Stairway to Heaven, Smoke on the Water, Free Bird, and Traditional Ale. All handcrafted in a high-volume world, and all Rock classics.

*Editor’s Comment: The first craft brewery in Canada was Horseshoe Bay Brewing out of Vancouver British Columbia, opening in 1982. A few years later, in 1985, Big Rock began brewing their core brews, including their Traditional Ale.

**Editor’s Comment: Our Reviewer’s lack of comprehension is at times incomprehensible, and often reprehensible.

Final Rating: Another Rock Classic at 17 out of 20
