A-spiring to new heights.

From Sweden to Poland and now we find ourselves in Spain on this COMDB European armchair tour. * Barcelona, home of Sagrada Familia Basilica, a church that’s been under construction for over 140 years, for heaven’s sakes. When asked about why the construction was taking so long, Chief Architect Antoni Gaudi said, “My client is not in a hurry.” **

Barcelona is also home to the Damm family brewery, purveyors of award-winning pints the world over since 1876. The star of their show, and today’s featured brew, is Estrella Damm. ***

This Mediterranean Lager is a clear golden pour, with a one finger halo of a head. It has a fresh light malt aroma, possibly some citrus in the mix. First taste is light and malty with a touch of graininess, definitely European. A smooth full mouthfeel with a lager sweet, no hops, no bitters finish. Big swigs (yes more than one) turn up a bit of backend bitters, and result in a decisive big swig test pass. A touch of lemon citrus shows up as well. It’s a smooth almost creamy lager. Quite enjoyable.

Just like Gaudi, this brewery has a-spired to greatness, the result is a Damm Star.

*Editor’s Comment: Sweden is part of Scandinavia but is also part of the European Union, having joined in 1995.

**Editor’s Comment: Construction on the Sagrada Familia began in 1882. Shortly after that Antoni Gaudi took over as the chief architect and combined gothic with nouveau art forms to create the most unique classical church in the world. In October 2025 part of the central tower was placed, reaching 163m high, making it the world’s tallest church. The tower reached its full height of 172.5m in February of this year.

***COMDB Translation Department Comment: Estrella is Spanish for “star”.
