Blueberry Wheat

The last time I ordered a beer at Tom’s Place was 51 years ago,  and this time I didn’t get carded. * A cozy quaffing cafe that looks like a taxidermist showroom,  more stuffed animals than a hotdog eating contest. But not exactly a craft conisseur’s oasis. All the old standards were there, but not a wide variety of craft brews from which to choose. But they do know their ABC’s, including one Ashton Brewing Company Blueberry Wheat which just happened to be the only brew on the menu that never had a review from you know who.

Combining two genres that I’m not enamored with may have been a one way ticket to a poor pour score, but you just never know till you give it a go, you know, so here goes.

A very heady pour seemed to be noticed by all the other heads on the wall. The moose looked sympathetic, the bison stoic, and the deer a bit surprised at such an over the top pour by our server. No harm no foul, it settled into a good looking brewberry ale. A light aroma of basic malt and blueberries. The first taste is mild malt to middlin’ blueberries with a light ale finish. No bitters from this very low IBU brew. And none of those less desirable Wheat attributes either. Well balanced and consistent. Not subtle, not over the top, it was smooth and easy drinking.

Although not my favourite combo, it looks like ABC know their Ps and Qs when it comes to blueberry brews. Tom’s Place served up a nice meal with this tasty brew,  I don’t think I’ll wait another 51 years before coming back again.
