The Ports

The Ports is like Cheers for seniors, where everyone used to know your name. * Whenever I drink a pub ale I immediately think “would this meet the high standards of the Ports clientele.” If it is cold and beer it certainly meets those standards. But as far as a COMDB review goes, it’s all about whether this not so recently retired wannabe Ports regular likes it or not. Time to inhale this ale and give it a pass or fail.

This Publican House Kawartha Lakes Kolsch has a golden clear pour with one finger of foam, it certainly looks Ports worthy. ** It has a fresh malt aroma. First quaff is a creamy malty body with a very slight fizzy bitter finish and mild bitter aftertaste. The malt starts to go to a touch of a lager sweet, then right to a classic ale finish, light crisp and bitters. Very nicely balanced, with a creamy bordering on nitro countenance to it.

I really enjoyed this Kolsch style brew, it could join Crosscut on tap at the Ports any day.

*Editor’s Comment: The Portsmouth House, also known as The Ports, is located in Portsmouth Village in Kingston Ontario. The building itself dates back to 1873 when Edward Beaupre hosted neighbours to enjoy a brew or two. It opened officially as a pub in 1938.

**Editor’s Comment: This beer and others have been branded Publican House Brewery beers and are brewed by Kawartha Lakes Brewery.
