A Beer of Cultural Significance

On the Banks of the Mattagami

Full Beard Brewing Co.

5.5% Alcohol

A Center of Cultural Significance from a By Gone Era

In the Nashville of the North back in the day The Mattagami was the city’s cultural center, although the Maple Leaf could be a contender for the crown as well. The more sophisticated residents and visitors to Timmins would venture to the Mattagami for a libation or two among like minded friends and maybe take in the ballet which was performed at the venue on a regular basis.* Today there is a Future Shop where the Mattagami once stood proud, another sad casualty to the march of progress.

This brew pays tribute not to the aforementioned cultural landmark but to the Mattagami River which traverses through Timmins and across from Full Beard”s brewery. Not to be confused with the town of Matagami (one “t” not two), a mining town in North Central Quebec, that happened to have a cultural center of its own called “The Ranch”.*** But I digress.

Beer review time finally! A very dark brown pour, a tinge of red perhaps? Minimal head on these head waters. A mild porter like aroma of roasted malt, no, it has a more stout like aroma with a sweet note in there too. The first taste yields a malt roast with no sweet, a light watery lager mouthfeel, very easy drinking. No crisp, hops, zing, bitters or anything even slightly resembling an ale.  A bit of cocoa enters the picture, stout light, tasty. A nice cocoa sweet more like an American Brown than a British one. The traditional British nut replaced with the American brown sweet of the stout. Stout-standing.  A light easy drinker with a stout like demeanour. I am hit and miss when it comes to browns, but this is one any stout lover can appreciate, I certainly did.

*Editor’s Comments: It was a strip joint.

**Editor’s Comment: The Mattagami River runs 275 miles from its source at Lake Mattagami where it joins with the Missinaibi and the Moose Rivers on its way to James Bay. The name Mattagami comes from the Ojibwe which means “meeting of the waters”.

***Editor’s Comment: Another strip joint.
