A Belgian Wit, and That’s No Joke

Belgian Wit

Saulter Street Brewery

4.5% Alcohol

Is a Belgian wit a comedian from Brussels? I wish. Instead, it’s the dreaded wheat beer, not a COMDB favourite by any stretch of the taste buds. And not just any wheat, a Belgian one. But as I open my beer fridge, this beer of the month club offering is challenging me to keep an open mind as well.  I repeat the mantra I have crafted for just such situations, that being  “All beer is good, all beer is good” as I prepare for this white wheat wit.*  I guess having a Belgian wheat beer once in a blue moon won’t kill me.

The only thing white about this Saulter Street brew is it’s head. It pours a light malted barley brown hazy, a pretty pour of a pint, I must admit. A malt sweet aroma, and there are spices in there too, a summery saison? The first taste is complex malt, a sweet but almost ipa reminiscent malt, spiced with mild bitters and a peppery after taste. No hops on the premises. The body reminds me of a pale ale malt, the finish a spiced saison. The corriander and orange peel are certainly present and accounted for. Does it work? I need to do more research. Not bad, not bad. However more sampling is required to make a definitive decision. It alternates between bearable and interesting.

I guess this is true to a genre, more so than some that call themselves Belgian Wheat beers. No need to stick an orange slice in this one.  I’m not particularly fond of this beer type, but it had it’s moments.

*COMDB Translation Department: There are three official languages in Belgium, those being Dutch, French and German. Wit translates to white in Dutch.
