St.John’s July 9th 1892
Time for a coast to coast toast. Just finished a Vancouver tour and what could be further from Stanley Park than St. John’s? * Our Newfoundland tour begins with a St.John’s stalwart, an 1892, and what is so significant about that year is the burning question. The answer is that it was the year of the great fire of 1892 that decimated St.John’s.* 1892 is also the first brew that Quidi Vidi brewed and have been brewing since 1996. And there’s your history lesson for today.
I’m usually in good spirits when there are free spirits, and there’s nothing like an open bar to make any formal function sparkle and shine. I was keen to sample a Quidi Vidi ** having heard a lot about St. John’s perhaps best-known craft brewery. Time to taste test one of their core crafts and I was not disappointed.
The next burning question is whether this brew will achieve super suds status, An effervescent ale, bubbling with…. well bubbles. A nice golden ale, with a full malt aroma. And a full flavoured malt with an edge to it, not smooth but not harsh either, with a bit of ale bitters in the mix start to finish and all points in between. Almost a red, not quite an amber, balanced and refreshing, a nice full flavoured ale.
A good start to our East Coast toast. Did I mention the open bar?
