Couldn’t catch a break at Cold Break, a private party was going on and we weren’t one of their privates. Our host said, “let’s try the Merch, it’s always a good time”. Well as far as I was concerned, it was a good time to have a good time, so off we went. Bellying up to the bar to sample the local fare until we were able to snag a table. I partook in a Nitro stout which was strong enough to float an egg, a caffeinated quaff that hit the spot. And for dinner a Rueben sandwich so tasty that it should be hanging in the Louvre with his other masterpieces.*

As prophesized a good time was had by all. And on the way out I did some Christmas shopping for myself. It might be better to give than to receive but my motto this time of year is it is best to give and to receive. This review pertains to one of my early Christmas gifts to myself, because who knows best what I really want.** A Merchant Ale House Old Time Hockey amber lager sounds like a pour to adore because I love me an amber.
As for old time hockey, back in the day it was outdoor rinks, no pads, and slashing was an art not a penalty. Watching the Leafs win the cup was old time hockey for me, as in 1967 old times.
Snapping the cap on this big bold boisterous bodacious bottle of brew. A full dark amber countenance. It has a porter like aroma, roast malt with sweet. The first taste is a dark lager full roast with cocoa sweet finish, not watery but not creamy either, which leaves full bodied. They call this an amber but for me it’s a very tasty dark lager. So amber it’s a dark, and if this is their Amber I am eager to see what their dark lager will taste like. A very enjoyable well balanced full flavoured and full bodied sweet finished dark lager (amber according to them). No bitters just a smooth delivery and a cocoa sweet finish. A good beer for a good time.
