Waiter: Would you care for drinks.
Me: What do you have on tap.
Waiter: A light beer, an amber, and a black lager, Sir.
Me to Myself: (I love me an amber.)
Me: What brewer?
Waiter: Blackburn Sir, a local brewhouse.
Me: (Having sampled Blackburn’s amber before) I’ll try the black lager.
Waiter: The black lager is an acquired taste, Sir,
Me: Sounds good, once I acquire it, I’ll taste it.
Waiter: Very good Sir.
The Old Firehall at NOTL served up a tasty dinner with a black lager to boot. Not The Black Lager, but a black lager. A Blackburn Back Alley brewski. It is black, I’ll give it that. With a frothy, not foamy, bubble head. Roast malt aroma, but not stout like or porter like, more black lager like. First taste is watery, cocoa malt no coffee, it’s a toasted malt and sweet combo, with sweet tipping the scales, and the imbalance never adequately dealt with. Might be some very mild coffee in their unless my imagination is working overtime. It starts to gain more body, but it’s a Ballroom Blitz sweet hit.* Somewhat similar to my disposition, it gets sweeter as time goes on.**
Despite my penchant for dark brews, a taste for this was never quite acquired unfortunately. Not cocoa sweet or lager sweet, but coke sweet as in coca cola, as in too sweet.
