Port Perry, named after settler Peter Perry (not Katy Perry) and birth place of many famous people whose names I don’t recognize (not Katy Perry),* is also home to Canada’s oldest still standing grain elevator.** And of course, our brewer of the hour, Old Flame is Port Perry proud, hailing from there as well. Our past encounter with Old Flame was reminiscent of a Harvey’s hamburger, yes it was a beautiful thing. Let’s see how their latest offering fares.
Dark, clear and bright white. A juxtaposition of a description of this pretty Port Perry pour. The dark pour reflects some new flames for a touch of red. An aroma of not much, a bit of roasted malt, I think my sniffer is on a work to rule regime because I would have expected more from this redundant dark dunkel. Tasting time.
A roasted malt stout like flavour, watery mouthfeel, and a flat crisp finish. An interesting combo. Not smooth, it was a bit grainy and rough around the edges. Some caramel sweet entered the picture and seemed to grow as this brew warmed a bit. An almost, on the edge, close to, but not quite, over the top full flavoured brew. I think it would be a bit of flavour overload for some, but I enjoyed it as a cool evening by the fire quaff.
