Cool night, a fireside ABC brew and a good book with lots more letters in it. I think it is the unauthorized biography of our Editor.* I got to wondering if anyone reads anymore or any less for that matter. Statistics show that readers read the same but non-readers read less. How’s that for a pseudo-fact of non-epiphany proportions. Did you know that 64.7% of all statictics are made up? **
I do know that people watch more TV then they used to, and watch TV lots more than reading.*** When I was a kid there was one TV in the house and we got to watch our cartoons Saturday morning (weekly) and the Leafs win the cup (once every 60 years, we can hope), so not much tube time. Today people watch TV on their tablet while they are brushing their teeth, along with whatever else they do behind closed washroom doors.
On our last visit to Ashton, home of ABC brewers, we didn’t blink so we didn’t miss it. We did go through a number of Not So Frequently Asked Questions about Ashton and it appears that the population is holding steady at 212 residents as long as Fred hasn’t wandered off again.
As for this brew, an ABC golden cream ale pours a clear gleaming beaming golden, with a thin seam of cream atop. A wisp of foam that would be hard pressed to call itself a head. Some malt and fruit in play, no hops or zing encountered on this sniffing. Solid malt, mild apple pear like fruit and a touch of hoppy bitterness calling itself crispness on the finish. Watery mouthfeel, not creamy, but refreshing. This is a solid ale with a bit of bitter crispness on the finish that doesn’t stick around, no aftertaste. According to ABC this is “gold, crisp and refreshing”. I would have to say it has checked all those boxes.
