An Amber for the Ages

Organic Amber Lager

Mill Street Brewery

5% Alcohol

There are beers that are good and beers that are great. This beer is both. I sampled this Mill St. brew, which I didn’t recognize, and I loved it. Smoothness of a lager with the full flavour of an amber. A near perfect combination.

Then I read the fine print, in a very small font above the Organic Amber Lager I see 100th Meridian. Aha! One of my favourite beers repackaged*. So I guess this makes this a retro review.

I still love it. And I do like the fact that the name is a reference (purposeful or not) to the Tragically Hip song of the same name, and the reference to the Tragically Hip song celebrates Canada and was there before their final tour so wasn’t monopolizing on sympathy for Gord Downie. But it makes you wonder why they have de-emphasized the 100th Meridian name?**

Anyone a bit reluctant to dive into an amber should try this beer. Not at all aggressive, smooth and flavourful and easy drinking as well. I am not an easy 18!

*Editor's Comment: Mill Street has gone all out with its "Organic" branding.

**Editor's Comment: In 2021 the Hip sued Mill Street for the unauthorized use of the name of one of their songs. 100th Meridian on its own designates a line of longitude that separates the western plains from Central and Eastern Canada. However apparently Mill Street used graphics and references to associate the beer with the band, creating a link between the beer name and the band's song of the same name.

***Reviewer's Comment: Had one on draught the other day. As good or better than one from the can. I love this beer, so sue me.

Final Rating: Love me an Amber 18 out of 20
