Bad Robot or Good Robot?

Bad Robot

Cameron's Brewing

8.2% Alcohol

Our culture seems to love bad robots as much as good ones. The “Star Wars” robots were heroes. Governor Schwarzenegger was a bad robot in” Terminator” but comes back (he told us he would be back) as a good robot in “Terminator 2: Judgement Day”. In the original “Lost in Space” TV series the robot (simply called Robot and short for a “B-9 Class M-3 General Utility Non-Theorizing Environmental Control Robot”) is good, in the recent Netflix remake we aren’t so sure. Asimov’s 1950 classic “I,Robot” collection of short stories introduces us to the three laws of robotics*, which good robots abide by and bad robots seem to enjoy ignoring.  In Arthur C. Clarke’s “A Space Odyssey” we meet Hal 9000, the robot that controls the space station and appears to be a good robot however (SPOILER ALERT) we eventually find out Hal has nefarious intentions and is in fact a very bad robot.

Queen’s Original Killer Robot

Queen’s 1977 album “News of the World” featured a giant robot** killing the band members and then wreaking havoc on the general populace, we assume he was in fact a bad robot.

I am sure all of this is very interesting to Sci-Fi geeks like our Editor, but it is all just a segue to review this beer and see if this Cameron’s Bad Robot is in fact a good robot.

A golden peachy hazy pour with a nice light head that stayed the course. A nice fresh fruit and hoppy aroma. First taste is a fruit body with a mild bitter finish with a touch of booze in the mix. It is a  nice sequence, it works well and is well balanced. It evolves into a nice NE tropical fruit and mild bitter on the finish. I was surprised after to read it is an 8.2% brew, it was only slightly boozy on first swig but not at all as things progressed. The touch of booze upfront is what you pour a double for.

Nothing bad about this robot, solid fruit flavour with some slight bitters on the back nine, a nice refreshing NE Double.

*Editor’s Comments: Asimov’s Three Laws of Robotics are as follows. First Law: A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. Second Law: A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law. Third Law: A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

**Editor’s Comment: The cover art for the Queen's “News of the World” album was actually originally seen on the March 1954 cover of “Astounding Science Fiction”. Roger Taylor, the band’s drummer, was a sci-fi fan and had seen the cover previously. Queen approached the artist, Kelly Freas, to recreate his original graphic for the album.
