Balancing Act

Clifford Porter

Clifford Brewery Co.

5.9% Alcohol

I go to my freezer to pull out a chilled glass, but the only one there is a pilsner freeze glass which are great when you need a super cold, cold refreshing brew. But my old buddy Rick says that sometimes these beers, particularly porters and stouts, evolve a bit as they fend off that chill. Although he quaffs them down before they have time to say Bob’s your uncle, let alone warm up. That being said, a rookie move on my part, or as the grand-kids would say, a “noob” move. But I didn’t want to wait to chill another glass, patience being the last virtue I dispensed with years ago.

Dark pour with a sliver of a tan head. Great aroma, I could catch the chocolate, coffee and malt which combined into a caramel, but no one overpowering the others. Complex as my taxes. First swig, a robust, solid full flavour with coffee up first, chocolate in there too, no real bitter to talk about. Ok well just a touch of bitter.  Very easy drinking for a Porter, big swigs were possible, probable and the order of the day. Perhaps the best thing about this brew is the great balance. A mix of flavours that all worked together.
