Black Hole Sun is the name of a dark depressing song by Soundgarden,* or a dark impressive beer by Counterpart. You can take your pick or drink one while listening to the song like I did. Then after 5 minutes and 18 seconds I tuned out Soundgarden, turned on the Oilers game with this tasty dark lager as my wing can, then turned in after finishing this brew and the first period. Just to be clear, the song, the beer and the Oilers were all very good last night.
For a Niagara based brewer “Black Hole Sun” could also be a nod to the recent eclipse that was front and center in the area. This black hole is not to be confused with another astrophysical brew recently reviewed, Long Dark Voyage to Uranus.
This brew pours path of totality black, with no aurora or head to speak of. A full stout like aroma with roast malt coffee sweet all waiting to go on stage. It has a watery light mouthfeel to go with its full flavoured dark lager body with a bit of tingle going on. Roasted malt and a bit of cocoa sweet. Decaffeinated, as in no stout espresso on the menu tonight. The lighter body allows for a full swig, which yields full roasted malt dark flavour. The fizz is hizztory, ending up with a light body full roasted malt with very subtle sweet and bitter finish.
A very tasty and easy drinking dark lager.
