Passing through the Muskokas meant a chance to stop by the largest beer spa in the world and partake in some campfire smoke at Clear Lake. A tasty entrée with an adult beverage for an appetizer, that’s the ticket. A gander at the On Tap menu, said the excited goose. It appears Clear Lake has taken the plunge and gone dark and smoky, that much is clear. A dark brown-black brew tapped out, with a tan white topper and the bar staff standing behind their pour.
An aroma of roasted malt and cocoa, and just enough of that campfire smoke to keep the mosquitos away. It has a slightly creamy mouthfeel with roasted malt, cocoa, and a bit of smoke in there too. It is complex yet balanced, different yet intriguing, tasty yet not done. A big swig generates some intensity and gives some lingering bitters adding a level of complexity previously unknown in this tasting. As it warms a bit the bitters stay, the smoky stays, but the cocoa is a no show. But still balanced.
Not everyone will love it but I’m not everyone. * Upon reflection, I am not usually a smoke or mirrors fan, but this one is subtle enough not to smoke me out. An interesting trip to the dark side, with the usual great service and food as well.
