I had a chance to visit Powerhouse Brewery in London, Ontario on the weekend and it was terrific. The brewery is in a former Kellogg plant and the transformation from Corn Flakes to beer is enough to bring a tear to a cranky old eye.

Power to the People
From a distance it still has the industrial look and the origins are preserved inside with many of the original signs and posters from the plant decorating the inside. The food and staff are excellent, but lets face it, you are here for the beer and it doesn’t disappoint. I gravitated to the APA which might be my favourite style and found it well balances with the citrus hops I crave and just a touch of biterness to make the flavour noticeable, but not over-powering. I better check with the editor, but I think the term is “easy drinking”.*
Cranky though I am, I couldn’t really find anything to complain about. The beer is delicious, the food is great and the setting is a classic remodeled industrial complex with a hip vibe.** I’m a big fan of the Homecoming APA but I did notice that they have quite a variety of taps – so I’m now looking for an excuse to get back there and sample some of the other brews that I didn’t get a chance to taste on this go around.
It’s a powerhouse story of renewal for a landmark London industrial building and a story of great beer for those of us who like that sort of thing, by which I mean everyone.***
