Twiggs Fire Tower Coffee Dark Mild

Gateway City Brewery

3.4% Alcohol

When it comes to coffee, I like mine hotter than the hobs of hell, blistered lips be damned. Unless of course it is a coffee stout, then chill and swill is the plan. This isn’t a coffee stout though. It is a coffee dark mild, that being a dark English ale. Not just a dark English ale but a mild one, as in light. Perhaps the lowest ABV we have sampled to date?

Twiggs is a local fancy pants java joe joint, with tasty pastry to make your daily grind go down easier. A go to and be seen at place in the Gateway City. Their fresh roasted house blend is in the house and this beer.

A dark approaching but not quite black and therefore able to be clear pour. Not a latte of head. The aroma is cold coffee, that’s it that’s all, not overbearing, quite inviting. The taste is watery mild malt with a middlin’ coffee and cocoa finish, quite tasty actually, and balanced. It is exactly what it says it is. The coffee is in charge but it’s not Clockwork Orange eyes wide open* coffee, this coffee is chill and chilled. Not bitter or overbearing. Like a coffee stout light that works. Surprisingly refreshing.

*Editor’s Comment: In the 1962 Anthony Burgess book “A Clockwork Orange” the main character, a 15 year old juvenile delinquent, is convicted of murder and in prison subjected to an experimental behaviour modification treatment where his eyes are held wide open to watch disturbing videos while a drug is administered that causes him physical distress when witnessing violence. The book was adapted into a movie of the same name by Stanley Kubrick in 1971. The movie was quite controversial due to the graphic violence.
