The Copper Beech

Copper Beech is not a waterfront penny arcade or a holiday destination for your local constable. It is an actual tree and once again the Decew Falls team are giving us a local history lesson. The beech tree* at Drummond Hill Cemetery is a memorial to the soldiers that perished in the Battle of Lundy’s Lane during the War of 1812. They were protecting what was not yet but what is now Canada from our not then but now friendly neighbours to the South.

This copper craft is a much lighter coloured pour than the pic would suggest, more of a radiant ruddy reddish brown. This is a headless copper, no topper. The aroma of caramel peaked my thirst and my anticipation.  First swig is a smooth malt caramel toffee body, sweet, with a slightly bitter crisp finish.  Very easy drinking, big swigable.

I was feeling a bit peckish so I whipped up a budget conscious buffet; a chips, crackers and cheese charcuterie. Some serious snacking and swigging so to speak. The malt caramel sweet is balanced but at the same time at odds with a mildly bitter ale finish. A copper hopper, sweet and bitters hand in hand, and it works. An easy drinking full flavoured red,

*Editor’s Comment: The Copper Beech Tree at Drummond Hill Cemetery in Niagara Falls was planted in 1914 on the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Lundy’s Lane. There were 258 British and Canadian soldiers killed during that battle. The Niagara area was the “front” during the War of 1812.
