Cherry Dark Lager

The Society of Beer Drinking Ladies & Spearhead Brewing Co.

4.7% Alcohol

Get this! The Society of Beer Drinking Ladies has an inclusivity committee but I didn’t see any men on the committee. What’s that all about? Here at Cranky Old Men Drinking Beer we have made it clear that you don’t have to be old, cranky or male to submit a review. Our legal department tell us that we are politically correct to a fault. Or was that “at fault”. Maybe they said it was “somebody’s fault”? Semantics.* Suffice to say that Cranky Old Men Drinking Beer would welcome an invitation from The Society of Beer Drinking Ladies to propose a candidate for their inclusivity committee.

Our topic today is about a current (as opposed to our future) SBDL collaboration with none other than Kingston’s Spearhead Brewery. A cheery Cherry Dark Lager was a group tasting at the most recent COMDB Muskoka Oktoberfest. Not standard Oktoberfest fare we know, but an interesting departure from more Festbiers that I care to, or can, remember that evening.

As dark as a Johnny Depp/Tim Burton collaboration**. Let’s hope this brew has a twisted sense of humour too. It has a roasted malt coffee stout like aroma but a thin lager pour. But much unlike a stout, it is a bit of a fizz fest. The taste is full roasted malt coffee espresso with a touch of cherry. No cherry bomb here, a subtle cheery cherry berry this one. Definitely a stoutlike malt coffee, an acquired taste that I acquired fairly quickly. The name is cherry but the coffee is the real standout, and the fizz which was there start to finish.

Let’s put it this way, if you like dark lagers you may well like this one. If you aren’t well acquainted with the genre it may kick your ass and send you to the beer fridge for a palette cleansing Steam Whistle.

We liked it as a unique departure from the festing brews of the evening. Not a tail gate cooler stocker or a boathouse beer fridge staple, but a cool night sipping suds, maybe with your beer drinking lady, or your cranky old man.

*COMDB Legal Department: The courts usually don’t look favourably on a “semantics” plea.

**Editor’s Comment: Dark Shadows, Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow, Sweeny Todd, Ed Wood.
