What’s everyone looking at?

A dark beer while listening to Dark Side of the Moon seemed to be a fitting follow-up to all the hoopla surrounding the elliptical illusion. At least the clouds prevented any fried like eggs eyes, sunny side up I assume. For those of you who drove hundreds of miles, waited in mind numbing traffic jams, and paid exorbitant hotel fees just to see a cloudy day that hid the sun and the moon from their stellar appointment, the Government of Canada is offering you a refund. Just call 1-800- Fat-Chance.

RA said the coolest thing about it was when the streetlights came on, which was his cue to head to the Ports. JT and James cracked a couple of Cracked Canoes for the viewing. I was thinking of having a Corona during the event but that seemed a bit cliché. Farmer Steve heard you had to buy glasses to prevent post peak blindness and decided that he would check it out on the news instead, $2 bucks is $2 bucks after all. And Fonger chimed in and said “what’s everyone looking at?

A full solar eclipse is a unique event and we were in a good location for it. The only other time of year I am on the path of totality is at the COMDB AGM.

Dark days call for dark nights, and lo and behold a Köstritzer Schwarzbier from the German town of Bad was in the beer fridge chilling for a swilling. Let’s hope this one is better than the last Bad Köstritzer we sampled. They tell us this is Germany’s number 1 black lager,* time for a Great White North scoring.

It pours as dark as day, yesterday to be exact. Thick dark pour, it pours like a stout. Roast malt and lager sweet on the nose, smells like a stout. It has a great mouthfeel with a bit of a tingly fizz to help lighten things up. A roast malt cocoa thing is happening here resulting in a nice full flavoured dark. The bit of fizz  makes it easy drinking and refreshing, an interesting combo. There is some coffee but no bitters for a smooth finish. This dark totally eclipsed their Pils for a super suds score.

*Editor’s Comment: Köstritzer has been brewing their dark lager since 1543.
