After a triple chocolate 10% extreme extravaganza blast off it was time to bring me back to something closer to surface as in down to earth. So I thought it would be a good idea to get back to basics and explore a nice pilsner of the Italian persuasion. Enter Marco Polo. Famed 13th century Italian explorer, an incredibly irritating swimming pool game, a video based instant messaging system and now a pilsner from the Indie Alehouse.
Many brewers are venturing into the “new world” of Italian Pilsners and we have reviewed a few with varied results. Lake of Bays did well with Alla Caccia, Fenelon Falls and Henderson also were poured and scored.
This pil pours bright light gold and a touch hazy with a minimalist head of white. A mild malt bread aroma. An initial quaff reveals a standard malt bread flavour matching up with the aroma, but instead of a hoppy dry style finish it yields a slightly acidic bitter in the finish. Will this harsh finish fade and fold, or come back just as bold? Fading but not folding, not really the crisp dry finish I’ve come to expect from an Italian Pilsner. A mellow malt with a muted finish and an acidic bitter which settled down but never quite left the scene of the crime. An OK pilsner, with a touch of a rough finish. Maybe a bit too down to earth for me.
