Vanilla beers do not have a good track record with me (Lion’s Winter Ale, or Goodbye Gravity ) but I keep trying them. I don’t know if I am naïve or idealistic* but I keep thinking there has got to be the “just right” combination of the two that won’t offend my sensibilities or taste buds.
A cold night calls for a fireside quaff. Enter the mighty Mill Street and their Vanilla Porter. The first thing I noted is it is not branded “Organic” like most of their most recent offerings. Nitrogen charged for a smooth texture, and perhaps a bubbly personality?
The familiar nitro pop of the can was followed by a gorgeous creamy pour. No real carbonation to speak of. Dark body with a creamy light head. Very lite aroma, just a touch of vanilla but no strong porter in there. Very smooth and easy drinking, great mouthfeel, creamy and dreamy. Subtle vanilla, the just right mix I have been searching for. It didn’t really come on like a porter, more like a creamy stout. Light with just a touch of vanilla. If you didn’t know it was a vanilla porter you might be trying to discern what gives it that unique flavour.
Mill Street has winner with this one. Very good.
