Ducks in a Row

Decoy Lager

Spearhead Brewing Co.

4% Alcohol

Sergeant: I didn’t see you at our camouflage exercise this morning Private.

Private: Thank you sir.

I went duck hunting once, many years ago, my first and last hunting experience. It was with my father and grandfather. We got geared up early on a cold wet fall morning, boat in the bull rushes, decoys in the water.  And waited. And waited. “Can’t talk, we’ll scare away the ducks” was the whispered instruction to me. We waited in silence about 3 hours and never saw a goddamn duck.

I am guessing a similar experience could have been the start of Ducks Unlimited, a well-known wetlands conservation group that Spearhead is supporting with this brew. The origin of the “conservation” group is a bunch of duck hunters that were worried there weren’t enough ducks to shoot so they started a movement to conserve wetlands so there would be lots of ducks, unlimited numbers actually, to shoot.* A conservation group focused on conserving wildlife in order to shoot it, responsibly of course. A double duck decoy dichotomy I guess, but I digress.

Salty snack, chilled glass, classic rock radio, warm evening, all my ducks in a row for a relaxing brew tasting. George Thorogood on the radio, me and him drinking alone together** although when he drinks alone George prefers to be by himself.

How about this Spearhead brew. A beauty of a pour, just ducky. Sure doesn’t look like a light beer. Solid malt with a touch of fruit on the nose, sure doesn’t smell like a light beer. Full malt flavour, with a crisp slightly bitter finish, sure doesn’t taste like a light beer. This is one full bodied lager, regardless of the ABV or what they call it. Full flavoured great tasting lager, that just happens to be light too. A light beer that isn’t. Well done.

*Editor’s Comment: Wild ducks in general are not an endangered species. But if you are hunting in Ontario there is a limit to the number of ducks you can “bag” in a day, that would be 6.

**Editor’s Comment: The song “I Drink Alone” was written and performed by George Thorogood and the Destroyers from their 1985 album “Maverick”. “Yeah, you know when I drink alone, I prefer to be by myself.” Billy Bob Thorton played the hard drinking lead in the music video.

Final Rating: This Light Beer Isn't, But it is a 15 out of 20
