At a Hy steaks dinner, way out of my price range. Luckily the only thing I was paying was attention and compliments. Had a great chat with the bartender who once he discovered I was a beer reviewer (I told him in hopes of a freebie, no dice) asked me what has become a standard question “What’s your favourite beer” to which I answered “the one in my glass right now”. And the one in my glass at that moment was a Backpacker Blonde by Eastbound.
“Eastbound and down, loaded up and truckin’, we’re goin’ to do what they say can’t be done.”* In the movie “Smokey and the Bandit” Reed (Jerry, not Lou) is singing about transporting 400 cases of Coors across state lines. I can relate, having recently hauled a six pack across the border from NY to Ontario. I’m no classical poet like old Jerry Reed but I’ve got an “Eastbound goin’ down, loaded up for quaffin’ and I’m going to tell you all about it when I’m done.” Beer review segue complete.
A nice golden clear beer pour with a north bound head of white. A malt bread aroma, with a bit of honey sweet in the pack. Very nice lager like body with some lager sweet, refreshing and then a crisp bitter back of the pack brings you back to ale reality. Nice sequence and great balance. It is very easy drinking, this Eastbound is goin’ down just fine. Great ale with more malt flavour than your run of the mill blonde and a crisp almost pilsner like finish. This Backpacker could be a beer fridge packer.
